Leap Second

Danny Marsh is a Double-A second baseman one bad week from being released when he takes a glancing hit off a catcher's knee and gets up one second ahead of the world. Nobody sees it for what it is. From then on, everyone else is a step behind him, and he's the only one who knows it.

What follows is the best season of his life. But the second isn't fixed. It stretches. It eases back. And eventually it starts creeping toward zero, without warning and without anything Danny can do about it. He can't explain what happened to him. Explaining it would only sound worse.
